Altar of the Dead / Altar de Muertos 

For those of Mexican heritage, November 2nd means celebration of el Dia de Los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead”. Many join All Saints and All Souls together, first visiting the graves of babies and children on All Saints, since they are santitos (little saints) or angelitos (little angels). Flowers, their favorite toys, favorite music, and so on, are taken to them. The following day, they spend time- some of them all day, at the cemetery with their loved ones, who have died. From the ancient customs of the Indians, the families pray and talk with them, and take them their favorite foods. The dead are not feared, but deeply loved, and this joyful family feast points both to age old customs and Resurrection faith. There is a mocking of death as people make candy skeletons, and pan de muerto (bread of the dead), and consume them in a kind of role reversal.

One of the customs is to build an altarcito (little alter) where one places mementos and pictures of those who have died. There are also favorite foods, candles, statues or pictures of saints, books and Bibles.

Para aquellos de descendencia mexicana, noviembre 2 es la celebración “Del Día de Los Muertos”-Muchos se unen con todos los Santos y los Fieles Difuntos en conjunto, su primera visita es a las tumbas de los bebés (santitos) o ángeles (angelitos). Les llevan flores, sus juguetes favoritos, música favorita. Al día siguiente, algunos de ellos pasan durante todo el día en el cementerio con sus seres queridos que han fallecido. Desde  las antiguas costumbres de los indios, las familias oran, hablan con ello y les llevan su comida favorita. Los muertos no son temidos, porque son personas amaba profundamente, y esta fiesta  familiar feliz muestra tanto las antiguas costumbres y la fe en resurrección. No es una burla a la muerte la gente hace esqueletos, dulces y pan de muerto y los consumen en una especie de inversión de roles.

Una de las costumbres es la construcción de una altarcito (alter pequeño) donde uno pone los recuerdos y fotos de los que han muerto. También ponen sus comidas favoritas, velas estatuas o  imágenes de santos favoritos, libros y Biblias.
